I have known Canon Mary Glasspool for most of her eight years in the Diocese of Maryland -- at first only marginally, and in recent years much better, thanks to her pastoral visits to my parish. Mary is truly worthy of the office of bishop, and I give thanks to God that she has been called and affirmed in that role.
I also give thanks that our church has shown the courage of its convictions in making it clear that we accept God's call to ordination for all people.
I am sorry that many people are hurt or disappointed or furious over this event. I pray that we will be able to walk together and live with our differences. It is shameful that we are making human sexuality a central point in our self-definition. It is shameful that we are involved in civil litigation over property rights, and it is shameful that we cannot find a way to show Christ's love for all people, to all people.
Nevertheless, I rejoice with Mary and the people of the Diocese of Los Angeles. I wish I could be present at her consecration, but I am sure that I will have access to recordings of that blessed event. I will be there in my thoughts and prayers.
